Lake Cospuden – affectionately called “Cossi” by locals – is one of the most popular swimming lakes in and around Leipzig. Created from a former open-cast lignite mine, the lake has developed into a real local recreational paradise. Located just a few kilometers south of the city limits, it offers crystal-clear water, extensive beaches, idyllic lakeside paths and a vacation feeling almost like being by the sea.
The lake is part of Leipzig’s Neuseenland, a large-scale renaturation project that has transformed former open-cast mining landscapes into beautiful recreational areas. Today, Lake Cospuden attracts visitors from all over Saxony – for swimming, cycling, hiking, sailing or simply relaxing.
Highlights at Lake Cospuden:
- 1 km long sandy beach in the north – fine sand, shallow water, ideal for families with children
- 11 km of riverside path – perfect for cyclists, skaters, walkers and joggers
- Water sports facilities: Sailing, stand-up paddling, pedal boat and kayak hire
- Gastronomy & ice cream stands: lakeside terraces, beach bars, beer gardens
- Nature conservation and quiet areas in the south and west
- Dog-friendly: dog beach and walking paths away from the bathing areas
- Zöbigker marina: with jetties, boat moorings and harbor flair
If you feel like being active, you can easily cycle around the lake or connect to other lakes such as Lake Zwenkau or Lake Markkleeberg via well-maintained paths. The surrounding area is also ideal for picnics, sunsets and photo shoots.
Tip: In the summer months, we recommend arriving early – the lake is particularly busy at weekends. Parking spaces on the north and south shores are limited. Our centrally located parking lot in Leipzig is a relaxed alternative – with good public transport connections or bike rental nearby, perfect for a carefree day at the lake.
